One internal IT hire is a single point of failure

A company with exactly one internal IT hire has no redundancy built into the org chart. No coverage for a vacation, a sick day, a conference, or parental leave — and no depth in any specialty that person did not happen to pick up along the way, because they learned this job by doing it, not by staffing a full department around it. Every after-hours outage lands on one phone, at one specific person's expense, whether it is 6 p.m. on a Friday or 3 a.m. on a holiday weekend. When that person is unreachable for any reason, the business's internal IT capacity is not diminished — it drops to zero.

Meanwhile, the work that person was actually hired to do — infrastructure projects, planning, the strategic side of the role — loses out every week to password resets, printer jams, and one-off tickets that consume a senior salary on problems a tier-1 technician could close in minutes. And no single generalist stays current on identity management, networking, backup architecture, and security at the same depth all at once; something always gets the least attention, usually whichever domain nobody happens to be complaining about yet, right up until it is the thing that fails. Hiring a second full-time generalist to cover the gap rarely pencils out financially for a business this size, so the gap usually just stays open.

Co-managed IT is a staffing answer to both problems, not a quiet audition to replace your internal hire. Facet MSP takes on defined layers — after-hours and weekend coverage, tier-1 ticket overflow, and specialist escalation in identity and networking through Entra and Intune — while your internal person stays in charge, sets priorities, and decides what gets escalated and when. The split between what we own and what they own is written down and revisited, so nobody is guessing on a Tuesday afternoon who is supposed to be handling what, and the arrangement can shrink or grow as your internal team's headcount and confidence change over time.

What's included

Pick the layers you want us to own

01

After-Hours and Weekend Coverage

Nights, weekends, and holidays are covered by a technician on shift, not by your internal hire's personal phone. Critical alerts get a response without anyone losing a Saturday to a server that picked a bad time to fail, and your internal person gets a summary Monday morning instead of a middle-of-the-night text.

02

Tier-1 Ticket Overflow

Password resets, access requests, and routine how-do-I tickets route to us first, freeing your internal person from the queue entirely or partially, on whatever split makes sense for your team this quarter.

03

Patching and Endpoint Hygiene

Operating system and application patches are deployed and verified across the fleet on a schedule, so patch compliance is not one more thing your internal hire has to remember between actual projects, and it shows up as a number on a monthly report rather than a guess.

04

Specialist Escalation On Demand

Identity work in Entra, device policy in Intune, network changes, and security incidents get a specialist who does that work daily, rather than a generalist working it out for the first time under pressure and hoping it holds.

05

Project Capacity When You Need It

A migration, an office move, or a rollout gets extra hands for the duration of the project, without a permanent headcount increase your budget has to justify in every quiet month afterward.

06

Shared Documentation and Tooling

We work inside the systems your internal person already uses, or help stand up better ones, so nothing becomes a black box only we can operate — the goal is shared visibility, not a second, competing toolset that only we can read.

07

Vacation and Leave Cover

Your internal hire can take an actual vacation, sick day, or leave without arranging informal backup coverage themselves, because formal backup coverage from us is already part of the arrangement and does not depend on a favor from a friend at another company.

What you'll notice

What your internal team gets back

  • Your IT hire can take an actual vacation
  • Password resets stop consuming a senior salary
  • Specialist work gets a specialist, not a best guess
  • Nights and weekends are covered by someone on shift
  • Project backlogs start moving again
  • You keep institutional knowledge in-house
Why Facet

We are not auditioning for their job

Your IT lead stays in charge.

We do not make architecture decisions or set priorities unilaterally — your internal person directs the engagement and decides what we handle versus what stays in-house. Co-managed means reporting to them, not around them.

We take the work nobody wants, not the work they like.

The split is deliberately weighted toward after-hours coverage, tier-1 overflow, and the tedious maintenance work that erodes a good IT hire's job satisfaction — not the interesting project work they actually want to keep.

The split is written down and revisited.

What we own and what your team owns is documented, not assumed, and we revisit it as your internal hire's role or your business changes — the arrangement is meant to flex, not calcify into an org chart nobody chose.

Questions

Co-managed IT questions

Is this a polite way of replacing our IT person?

No — the model is built around your internal hire staying and directing the relationship. We take defined layers off their plate; we do not compete for their job, and the engagement is structured so they stay the decision-maker.

How do we decide which tickets come to you?

Together, upfront, based on where your internal person wants relief — commonly after-hours coverage and tier-1 overflow first, with specialist escalation added once the split is working. It is a conversation revisited quarterly, not a rule fixed at signing, and either side can propose moving the line.

Do we have to switch to your tools?

Not necessarily. We work inside your existing systems where that is practical, and propose a change only where the current tooling is genuinely limiting what either of us can do — never simply to standardize on our preferred stack for its own sake.

What if our internal person leaves?

We already know your environment, so continuity does not depend entirely on the next hire's memory. We can carry more of the load temporarily while you recruit, or help onboard a replacement faster because the documentation, access lists, and history already exist.

Can we start with just after-hours coverage?

Yes. Most co-managed relationships start narrow — usually after-hours coverage or tier-1 overflow — and widen once it is clear the split is working. There is no requirement to hand over more than you are ready to.
